At the start of this year, I saw The Cruel Prince a lot on both social media and Goodreads. I bought the book, because the plot sounded interesting. I was really excited to read it and I finally did.

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

At first, it started out alright. We got a proper introduction to the story, the world and the characters. However, nothing happened after that introduction. The plot was not moving until the last our. I listened to this book on Audible and I eventually got so bored that I turned the speed up to 3.0. Ouch.

So what else can I say about the book? I was on the edge of DNF’ing it several times. All characters were annoying except Vivi and Oak. Jude kept bragging about how much she wanted to be a faerie. Nope. Sorry. This is my first introduction to Holly Black’s books and it unfortunately didn’t work for me. I’m a massive fan of the A Court Of Thorns And Roses series by Sarah J. Maas and maybe that didn’t really help. However, you can’t compare these two books to each other at all. I can’t say anything useful any more about this book. In fact, I can’t even remember what happened. I have to admit that I didn’t pay any attention anymore in the end, so maybe you can consider this as a DNF, although I finished the audio file. I immediately returned it to Audible.

  1. I feel (almost) the same way, I was really excited to read it! I did like the beginning and the ending of the book, but it took me a long time to get through the middle of it, it wasn’t really that interesting. Also, YAY acotar!!?
