(EN) Review: V. E. Schwab – A Gathering Of Shadows (Shades Of Magic #2)

After reading A Darker Shade Of Magic this summer, it was finally time to read the second book in this series. I will use a different format than I usually do, because I have a feeling that bullet point reviews will fit sequels in series better than a fully written review. All credit goes to Marie for this idea, she uses this format for quite a while now.

It has been four months since a mysterious obsidian stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Prince Rhy was wounded, and since the nefarious Dane twins of White London fell, and four months since the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift--back into Black London.

Now, restless after having given up his smuggling habit, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks as she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games--an extravagant international competition of magic meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries--a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

And while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night will reappear in the morning. But the balance of magic is ever perilous, and for one city to flourish, another London must fall.

Positive points

  • Introduction of new characters. We get introduced to two new characters, one of them being Alucard.
  • Diversity. Yes, there is diversity in this book and I am definitely not telling you in what way.
  • Twists and turns. A CERTAIN SOMEONE ISN’T DEAD GUYS.
  • Various povs. It could be really annoying, but in this book it works out pretty fine. Actually, it’s necessary for the story I suppose.
  • The Essen Tasch. Like, WHAT. A. GAME. It’s a tournament full of magic.
  • Lila. She is so tough and has some tricks up her sleeve.
  • The cliffhanger. DAMN YOU! I need to get to the next book as soon as possible.

Negative points

Not many, but there are a few.

  • The beginning of the story. It took a good while for me to get sucked back into the world of the four Londons and its magic.
  • The pace. It therefore took a good while before this book to pick up speed.
  • Rhy. He annoyed me sometimes, so did Maxim.
  • The clifhanger. Yes, both positive and negative, because it’s a tough one.

This was my bullet point review for A Gathering Of Shadows. Do you like this format for sequels in series? Plus, would you like to ever compete in such a tournament as the Essen Tasch?
