Review: Erin Stewart – Scars like wings

Posted november 11, 2019 by Laurie in English, Recensies, Reviews, Young Adult / 1 Comment

A while back, I stumbled upon Scars like wings by Erin Stewart. I immediately added it to my TBR, because such stories interest me. First of all, I haven’t read any book about a burn survivor in Young Adult bfore. Furthermore, this story shows courage and empowerment, themes that are explored more and more these days.

  • Representation: Burn survivor, anxiety, insecurity, depression
  • Trigger warnings: Graphic description of burns and scars, (re-experiences of) a traumatic experience, bullying, suicide attempt

Mini reviews: The seven sisters serie by Lucinda Riley

Posted november 4, 2019 by Laurie in English, Recensies, Reviews, Roman / 2 Comments

I’m known for reading a lot of Young Adult books, but I like to expand my horizon and to read different genres as well. It was in September 2018 that I started reading The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley, because everyone kept raging about it in a good way and the books were literally everywhere. However, I deleted my first review of the first book because A) it was trash and B) I found it more suitable to write one giant review post with all mini reviews. This blog post will be updated and re-published once I finish The sun sister, which will be out here in February 2020. And then again once the seventh book in this series is out.

Posted november 2, 2019 by Laurie in English, Recensies, Reviews, Young Adult / 6 Comments

It has been a while, but I’m going to try and write more English reviews again. So, let’s start with Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. Can you believe that this is my first book by this authro? He has written and published so many books already and I haven’t read any of them. Well, I finally listened to the Skyward audiobook and I don’t understand why I didn’t pick up one of Sanderson’s books before.

(EN) Review: Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman – Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle #1)

Posted juni 3, 2019 by Laurie in English, Recensies, Reviews, Young Adult / 3 Comments

After reading Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman, I knew I wanted to read Aurora Rising. Illuminae unfortunately didn’t work for me because of its unusual format, but this book is written in the traditional format and the synopsis sounded appealing to me. Moreover, my expectations were set high because of all the hype the ARC of Aurora Rising was receiving. Did this book live up to the hype for me?

(EN) Review: Natasha Ngan – Girls Of Paper And Fire (Girls Of Paper And Fire #1)

Posted mei 19, 2019 by Laurie in English, Recensies, Reviews, Young Adult / 2 Comments

When Girls Of Paper And Fire came to my attention, I was not sure whether I wanted to read it or not. First and foremost, I saw mixed reviews and second, it took place in a palace. Again. I was not sure if I could handle another book in that kind of setting. Therefore, I pulled off reading this one until I purchased it back in February. I finally came around to read this and this book was so different from what I first expected this to be.

Trigger warnings: sexual assault, violence, rape, physical and mental abuse, homophobia. Representation: Asian, lesbian.

(EN) Review: Illuminae and why it didn’t work for me

Posted mei 9, 2019 by Laurie in English, Recensies, Reviews, Young Adult / 1 Comment

I have been seeing Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff on social media and other blogs for a while now. I recently reactivated my Scribd account – because let’s face it, it’s so much cheaper than Audible – and I saw the entire trilogy on there. Time to check out what all this hype was for.
