(EN) Bookending Autumn: Pumpkin Carver Challenge

Just 2 days till Halloween, which means that there are just 2 days of Bookending Autumn left! Today i’m doing a prompt created by Sam, one of the organizers of the quarterly Bookend events. I have to admit that I’m not familiar with horror creatures at all, so I don’t know who Jack O’Lantern is, but spelling out his name in books seems like a nice challenge. I will use my “read” shelf on Goodreads to fulllfill this challenge, so let’s see what I could find!

J: Jinxed by Amy Mcculloch

I read this book back in January when the Dutch version of this book was released. I really enjoyed it and rated it 4 stars. I have no idea whether the sequel will be translated as well, probably not before January 2020.

A: Archenemies by Marissa Meyer

I heard people already got their hands on the final book in this trilogy, Supernova. The release of the final book is one of the reasons I picked Archenemies, but also because I really liked this book and rated it 5 stars.

C: Caraval by Stephanie Garber

I have been late to the party and started this series back in Janaury this year. On a positive note, I didn’t have to wait that long to get my hands on Finale! I read the first 2 books of this series in Dutch but I read Finale in English. The English book was easy to read as well and I simply just couldn’t wait as the translation has been postponed from October to November. Anyway, I rated all books 5 stars, thus Caraval as well.

K: Keepsake, the by Tess Gerritsen

Oh I love the Rizzoli & Isles series! Not the tv show, but the books. I quit the show after a few episodes. I read this book years and years ago, but this one was pretty horrifying. I rated this 5 stars as well.

O: Opal by Jennifer Armentrout

This is the third book in the Lux series and it has a huge cliffhanger. I finished this book in literally one day and I rated it 5 stars.

‘: N/A

L: Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

What is a Halloween prompt without at least one mention of vampires? Exactly, nothing. So far, Vampire Academy is the best vampire series I’ve ever read, so I had to pick one of these. The book I picked is the sixth and final book in the series and I, again, rated it 5 stars. Do you see a pattern here?

A: Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian

OK I will immediately break that pattern, because I rated Ash Princess either 3 or 2.5 stars, but I will still listen to the English audiobook of Lady Smoke. Maybe it was the Dutch translation or it’s just the story being too generic, we will see. I was quite bored, but I’m willing to give this series another chance.

N: Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

I read this book not long ago and rated it 4 stars. It’s quite complicated at times, but the writing is so magical. Godsgrave is on my TBR as well!

T: Talon by Julie Kagawa

Actually this was my first book by this author and I was pleasantly surprised. The Dutch publisher made a boxset with all the ebooks right before the summer holidays, so I bought it. And dragons do fit a Halloween prompt too. I rated this book 5 stars.

E: Empire of storms by Sarah J. Maas

Another 5 star read, oh I love this series! Empire of storms is one of the last keys to Kingdom of ash, Tower of dawn is the other key to that book. It contains humans, witches, fae, wyverns and a really rich world.

R: Raven boys, the by Maggie Stiefvater

One of the weirdest and most vague books I’ve ever read and I rated it just 1 star. But it fits this prompt because of it’s witchiness et cetera.

N: New moon by Stephenie Meyer

Let’s end this prompt with a throwback to my teenage years and my first introduction to YA, the Twilight series. It’s super cringy now, but back then I loved it. This is the second book in the series and again, I rated it 5 stars. My younger self did, I probably would lower my rating now.

Yes, I made it! I could find a book for each letter, but I had 500+ books to choose from. What is your favourite book out of this list?

These are some good choices!! And to be fair, Jack O’ Lantern isnt a person, it’s a type of design for carving pumpkins during Halloween. lol And yay for New Moon for being the best for last! 😉

Ooooooh oops! Halloween is not that big here, most provinces don’t celebrate it. And if it happens in your town you have to put a sign on your front door that people are welcome to trick or treat.

  2. I love how you included little paragraphs about the book instead of just the cover!

I hear lots of praise about the lux serie, maybe I should check ’em out! Yeah – The raven circle isn’t a serie of books i’m interested in reading either.. and you saying it’s vague absolutely don’t make me wanna pick them up anytime soon! 😂
